The article about Bill Dane was great, and since it's come up, I'm
curious to know how many other curators/librarians with similar roles
might be on the list. I'm pretty new to the library world (I've been in
my position about two and a half years), and it seems fairly rare for
public libraries to have permanent art collections.
At the Miami-Dade Public Library System, we have a permanent collection
of about 2000 works consisting primarily of works on paper (including
prints), photographs, small sculptures, and artists' books--mostly by
contemporary artists. The collection started more or less around 1970.
We continue to acquire new work and have an ongoing exhibition program.
I would love to hear from others who are developing and caring for art
collections at public libraries.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] N.Y. times article about Bill Dane
Hello all,
There's a good article about Bill Dane, of the Newark Public Library,
in the New York Times for Tue. Dec. 18, Metro Section (i.e. Sec. B),
p.1,6.
The article "Keeper of an Unlikely Trove, Gutenberg to Warhol", by
Andrew
Jacobs, is available on the paper's website for the next few days, and
directly
via the following permalink (which will continue to provide access, they
say, after
the article has passed into the NYT archives).
