This posting is directed at those of you who have faculty status in your
academic library. Please email me directly, if you have information and
experiences to share.
University of Maryland librarians have faculty status. Our
appointment, promotion, and permanent status procedures require that a
librarian demonstrate excellent performance in the areas of
librarianship, service, and research, scholarly and creative
activities. The last criteria--research, scholarly, and creative
activities--is generally defined and subject to interpretation. Aside
from the obvious book or article publications, this might also be
interpreted more broadly to include the creation of a new cataloging
protocol, or design of information software, etc.
Some colleagues are interested in citing the curatorship of large
library exhibitions in this category. Are exhibits that your library
faculty curate considered in your evaluation for promotion and tenure?
If so, can you provide some detail as to how you evaluate the faculty
member's involvement (for example, do size of exhibition and
accompanying publication influence your evaluation)?
