Hello -- This is a follow-up to an email I sent to both VRA-L and
ARLIS-L in mid-October. No one on either list had any information
about the Prometheus database. Apparently the first reply I received
to the email I sent to the Prometheus organization was filtered into
my junk mail and deleted. When I emailed them again yesterday, I
received a very quick reply. Here are the crucial bits of
information that they sent:
"Of course it is possible for a university in the USA to subscribe. A
campus license costs 2000 Euro per annum.
We do not have an English user interface yet, but we are generating a
new system at the moment (with an English user interface) which will
be done in february."
They also included information about a guest account that is active
for a month so that we could look at the collection, which I wasn't
expecting. So, if you think you might be interested in testing it,
just email them. Correspondence in English works fine.
Note that Safari does not work with their interface. I've tried it
both for looking at the English portion of the web site and for
loggin in with the guest account. Both result in blank windows.
Firefox has worked well so far for both. I haven't tried Internet
Explorer.
The URL for the database web site is http://www.prometheus-
bildarchiv.de/. Prometheus searches 33 institutional databases in
Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
