Dear Members,
The Executive Boards of ARLIS/NA and VRA are pleased to announce that
we will hold a joint conference in Minneapolis in 2011. The dates
for the conference will be March 23 through March 29, 2011. ARLIS/NA
and VRA have signed a contract with the Hilton Minneapolis as the
site for the joint conference.
A number of exciting developments over the past few years in the Twin
Cities should make our meeting in Minneapolis compelling. We believe
the memberships will greatly benefit from visiting a city with so
much cultural progress and an area where the art information
profession has been directly affiliated with this growth.
The Twin Cities is a growing community and the arts are accelerating
in tandem. The Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of
Arts have both recently seen building expansions, and the new
Minneapolis Public Library building, designed by Cesar Pelli, is
described as an architectural jewel. Frommer's guide recently
highlighted Minneapolis as one of the top ten travel destinations for
2007: "A Midwestern city already known for its gorgeous city layout
and its fine arts community, Minneapolis is experiencing a
cutting-edge design boom. The blockbuster new Guthrie Theater (now
located in the Mill District along the Mississippi River) is a sight
to behold -- a sleek, dark-blue steel building designed by the
architect Jean Nouvel. The Walker Art Center has been expanded and
also in the works is an addition to the Frank Gehry-designed Weisman
Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, which some say evokes his
later, more famous Guggenheiim Bilbao. Alongside the Mississippi is a
series of lakes that wind through downtown, where you can bike, jog,
or just hang out."
Both organizations have strong local support in the Minneapolis
area. We anticipate that this conference will offer a unique
opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in a culturally exciting venue.
Sincerely,
Deborah K. Ultan
