The Art Collection is pleased to host the sixth lecture in the series
addressing the growing needs and concerns of independent creative workforce
in New York City.
How should artists begin to navigate the ever-tricky terrain of the art
world? John Zinsser will introduce a list of "25 marketing tips" aimed
toward aspiring artists, culled from his experiences as a painter and his
observations of the art world as a writer, editor and teacher. Topics
covered will include:
• Communication skills
• Use of emerging technologies
• An objective look at the gallery as a business
In larger terms, issues of self-identity will be addressed, along with
ideas on provocation and its purposes. A question-and-answer session will
be included.
John Zinsser is an abstract painter and writer. His work has been
exhibited in some 30 solo shows in the United States and Europe. He is
also an instructor at the New School specializing in contemporary art,
students’ art-writing and art-speaking. He has written extensively for
such publications as Art in America, ArtNet and the Brooklyn Rail. In
1987, he co-founded Journal of Contemporary Art a magazine consisting
entirely of interviews with artists.
