Johannes Kirchmayer, 1860-1930, born in Oberammergau, Germany, wood carver
extraordinaire. The only individual, ever, to be awarded the Craftsmanship
Medal for Distinguished Achievement in, Wood Carving by the American
Institute of Architects. A carver of altars, pulpits, reredos, saints,
angels, pew ends, doors, roods, furniture, lecterns, organ cases, screens,
also a modeler.
A simple "list" of Kirchmayer accomplishments became a chronological
catalog, ranging from the smallest medallion carved in ivory (less than 2"
square) to the largest altarpiece called "A Christmas Festival in Heaven" in
oak
66" x 24" x 4".
Kirchmayer carved in wood, stone, and ivory; He modeled in plaster, clay,
and wax.
The book is a conglomerate of family history, biography, catalog, and
miscellaneous addenda. 130 pages, 32 page insert of colored pictures. Ready
mid-summer.
Johannes (John) Kirchmayer was Great-great Uncle of the author, F.Shirley
Prouty.
