With help from the Merian Foundation, they've put on line high-resolution
scans of 28,400 photographs taken by Swiss missionaries from 1850 to 1950.
It includes many photos documenting architecture and material culture
from around the world, in particular West Africa and Asia - esp. India
(e.g. some wonderful old photos of Bijapur and Calicut) and China.
The site has a user-friendly search engine,
as well as thematic presentations:

Individual photos come with full cataloging data, and images are free
for non-profit, educational use.
