The Art Libraries Society /North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual
Resources Association (VRA) are pleased to announce the 2007 Summer
Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management, to be
held at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana from June 24th –
29th, 2007.
This year topics will be clustered into a series of “Days” with
exercises included:
* Data Structure Day: Introduction of Metadata, Core 4,
Database Design, Work/Image, XML
* Content Metadata Day: Authorities, CCO, OAI, CDWA, EAD
* Imaging Day: Digital Copystand, Digital Project Management,
Photoshop, Color Management
* Digital Asset Management (DAMS) Day: What are they and how we use
them
* Strategy Day: Intellectual Property Rights, Archiving, Storage,
Funding, Assessment,Planning
Instructors, covering a wide range of expertise, are being drawn from
recognized professionals in the field, this year showcasing our
colleagues. Attendees, ranging from visual resources specialists to
academics to digital librarians and archivists to library school
students, will receive certification of attendance and completion from
our parent organizations. As most library and information science
programs do not address the needs of image collection professionals, the
ARLIS/NA –VRA Summer Education Institute (SEI) is intended to provide a
standardized and sustainable program for visual resources training, with
a focus on issues related to digital collection management and
item-level image metadata. As was true for the first three SEIs, the
2007 class is fast filling up. Future Summer Education Institutes in
2008 and 2009 will be held at James Madison University in Harrisonburg,
Virginia and Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts respectively.
