The new Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives, which is housed
in the Visual Arts Library at the School of Visual Arts, is set to open
its doors on Monday, October 16. The Archives’ mission is to collect,
preserve and make accessible design works of significant historical and
artistic value. The founding gift is from designer and illustrator
Milton Glaser, an instructor and board member at SVA since 1961. The
Milton Glaser Collection provides a complete overview of Glaser's vast
body of work: approximately 700 pieces of original art, 1,700 sketches,
380 posters, 150 prints, as well as newspapers and magazines, album
covers, menus, letterhead, annual reports, brochures and books designed
and/or illustrated by Glaser. The Archives also hold an extensive
collection of the printed work of the celebrated designers *Ivan
Chermayeff* and *Tom Geismar*; and the Henry Wolf Collection documents
the career of the influential art director, designer and photographer
*Henry Wolf*.
These holdings will provide an invaluable resource to the design and
academic communities. The Archives, a division of the Visual Arts
Foundation, will continue to seek to acquire materials—particularly from
artists and designers of special renown who have been affiliated with
SVA—with the intent of documenting the design process from concept to
completion.
The Archives will be open Monday - Friday, 9am – 2pm, by appointment
only. To schedule a visit or inquire about the collections, please
