A heads up and a request for ideas!
There will be a "Hot Topics" session at the conference in Atlanta --
what is a "hot topics" session, you may ask? The idea is to provide a
forum for a conversation of current, pressing topics in the field. We
envision a session in which you can come and hear from experts, listen
to your colleagues' experiences, and share your own experiences with
the newest (yes, hottest) topics swirling around arts libraries today
(academic, museum, art school, public, etc.). As you might imagine,
some of the topics will be technology related, but they don't all have
to be.
Aside from needing experts, your colleagues, and you at the session, we
need topics. I'll be keeping a finger on the pulse of the listserv
this year to identify issues that are keeping us all up at night [for
example: blogs, wikis, & podcasts (for reference?, for communication?),
streaming video, folksonomies, IM chat reference? (that one may be even
hotter than we want to handle), strategies for reaching students or the
public, our role in K-12 education, etc.]. Rebecca Cooper (who is an
active member of ArLiSNAP, the organization for Art Library students
and new ARLIS Professionals) is co-moderating the session with me and
will also be keeping her ear to the ground for topics, particularly
those that affect or come from our newest ARLIS/NA colleagues.
Please let me ([log in to unmask]) or Rebecca ([log in to unmask]) know
if topics/issues occur to you that you don't see brought up on the
listserv. In the dead of winter (late Jan/Feb) Rebecca and I (dare I
say, rebecca-squared?) will be sorting through all the ideas, finding
experts, soliciting further comments and expertise from our ARLIS/NA
colleagues, and formulating the outline of the session. Undoubtedly
some of the topics that are in the fore will be covered in much greater
detail in other sessions at the conference (case in point: Sherman's
recent email on folksonomies and cataloging and the session he's
preparing for the conference), and we'll probably not cover those in
such great detail.
We want this to be a session that responds to the current complexities
and needs of our profession. For that substance and relevancy, we're
counting on your pre-conference input. We look forward to hearing from
you.
