Anne,
We do the same things. I recently received a gift that had book plates
tipped in. I removed them, but left the signatures which I find
fascinating.

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Book sales and owners' signatures in books
hi sarah and others,
this is a really interesting question, and i'd be interested in others'
procedures too..it is so hard for me to believe that a big black magic
marker line is prefereable to just leaving it as is...personally, i love
the old signatures, or notes to the giftee from the gifter...we have a
large gift i'm working on right now, and i know that the one, now
deceased donor, would not for a minute care if we left his name in the
books--it seems defacing,to black out his name, plus magic marker has got
to be toxic to books(?)..
if we can pull a bookplate off, we do. i hope a lot of arlis-ers reply
to your query.

art books and unaccessioned donations. One question we need answered
before selling the books is what to do with donated books that have
donors' signatures and/or bookplates in them. None of these books are
rare or otherwise worth keeping, and the donors are all ordinary,
unheralded people like you and me.

My colleagues' experience in other libraries has ranged from not caring
at all about previous owners' signatures, to going through each book
with a black marker, to recycling outright any book with any mark of
ownership.
