There will be a presentation by Rhizome.org's Executive Director Lauren Cornell Weds. July 12 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Rhizome is leading new media art organization and an affiliate of the New Museum of Contemporary Art. A description of the talk follows. Cornell will be speaking generally on new media and digital art. She will also discuss the Metadata Project, which I think is of particular interest to this list. Initiated in April 2006, the Project will re-structure the descriptive terms and vocabularies that index Rhizome's singular archives of digital art and writing.

The innovative programs of Rhizome.org will be the subject of the July 12th ARLIS/NY program, which will take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art at 3:30 p.m. The presentation will take place in the Board Room, with a reception to follow in Watson Library.
Rhizome's mission statement follows: Rhizome.org is an online platform for the global new media art community. Our programs support the creation, presentation, discussion and preservation of contemporary art that uses new technologies in significant ways. We foster innovation and inclusiveness in everything we do.
Lauren Cornell, Executive Director of Rhizome.org, will give an overview of new media art through a discussion of different artists and genres that have emerged since the mid-90s. She will discuss Rhizome's role in the development of the field, and outline the organization's programs, which include commissions, journalism, exhibitions and preservation. She will focus on the Metadata Project, which is an initiative geared towards re-structuring and improving the descriptive terms and vocabularies that index Rhizome's archives. The Project was initiated in late April 2006 and is currently underway. Lastly, Lauren will talk about the Organizational Subscription program and what kind of access and benefits being an institutional member of Rhizome provides. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. More about Rhizome at http://rhizome.org <http://rhizome.org/>
I can promise an engaging and thoughtful program that should be of great interest to all members of ARLIS/NY and I encourage you to attend. I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, July 12th at 3:30 p.m. at the Metropolitan.
