NEW YORK STATE COLLEGE OF CERAMICS AT ALFRED UNIVERSITY
Scholes Library seeks a Public Services Librarian to join a small team
of experienced librarians working in a supportive, collegial environment
in which innovation and personal initiative are highly valued. The
successful candidate will have a strong service orientation and a
genuine enthusiasm for providing instruction and serving the information
needs of patrons at all levels, from first-year students to faculty.
Scholes (http://scholes.alfred.edu) is a specialized library which
provides information services to nationally-ranked programs in the
College's School of Art and Design (B.F.A., M.F.A.), its Kazuo Inamori
School of Engineering (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.), and externally funded
research programs. Alfred University's scenic 232-acre hillside campus
adjoins the unique educational Village of Alfred, located about 70 miles
south of Rochester, New York. Scholes is one of three academic libraries
in Alfred; all are members of the SUNYConnect initiative, providing an
expanded professional environment with many opportunities for networking
and collaboration. Primary responsibilities of the Public Services
Librarian:
* Oversees all aspects of the library's Circulation and Reserve
operations, including management of the Aleph 500 circulation system,
traditional and electronic reserves and an extensive media reserve
collection; supervises one full-time staff member; and coordinates the
hiring and training of student assistants in Public Services, including
development of effective orientation programs
* In consultation with the Director and other library faculty,
determines, implements, and modifies Public Services policies and
communicates them to patrons
* Collaborates with other library faculty to provide individual
and group instruction, and with teaching faculty to promote information
literacy initiatives on a campus level
* Shares in the design and implementation of user-oriented
services including Web pages, customized electronic resources, and the
development of an information commons area
* In the absence of the Art Librarian, serves as liaison to
students and faculty in the School of Art and Design, providing
instruction, assisting with collection development, and related
responsibilities as needed
* Coordinates scheduling of Reference Desk coverage, assists with
the hiring and training of part-time weekend reference assistants, and
shares in the general reference rotation, including some evening hours
(normally one three-hour evening shift per week) and occasional weekend
hours
This is a 10-month, tenure-track faculty position; appointment is
anticipated at the Assistant or Senior Assistant Librarian level.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience; excellent
benefits package. ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent degree required, 1- 2
years' academic library experience preferred; experience with an
integrated library management system highly desirable; subject
background or coursework in art, art history, or science is a plus.
Professional and scholarly contributions appropriate to the library's
criteria for promotion and tenure are required along with a strong
customer service orientation, excellent communication and teaching
skills, and an enthusiasm for promoting information literacy through the
integration of traditional resources and services with new technologies.
