Head, Image Collection Library
Librarian II or III
The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks candidates for the position of
Head, Image Collection Library. Has substantial independent responsibility
without immediate supervision. Reports to the Associate Director for
Collection Services who reviews performance for effectiveness of Image
Collection Library operations, coordination with other service providers,
and conformance with established policies, rules and regulations. Provides
overall administration of the Image Collection Library including collection
development, image production, cataloging, training, and database
management. Plans and conducts training on use of images to support
teaching and research. Collaborates with a variety of library departments
(including Research and Instructional Services, Acquisitions/Electronic
Resources, and Cataloging & Processing) and other campus units such as
academic departments and programs and Academic Computing. Supervises the
Image Collection Library staff and student workers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s degree in library sciences from an American Library
Association-accredited library and information studies program.
2. Minimum of 2 years of experience in progressively more responsible
public services positions in an academic or research library, including
project management and information management expertise.
3. Working knowledge of French and/or German language.
4. Experience managing collections of digital and slide images,
preferably in an academic environment.
5. Thorough knowledge of AACR2 2nd ed. rev., Library of Congress
Subject Headings, MARC 21 format, and the OCLC cataloging system.
6. Experience with one or more of the following metadata standards:
Dublin Core, VRA Core, METS/MODS, OpenURL, OAI-PMH, EAD, XML, TEI, or
others.
7. Knowledge of how digital library collections and electronic objects
are used in an academic setting.
8. Knowledge of integrated library system functionality pertaining to
cataloging.
9. Knowledge of digital asset management systems, such as Dspace,
CONTENTdm, etc.
10. Current experience and working technical knowledge of image
management and presentation tools such as LUNA/Insight, and computer
software such as Photoshop, Powerpoint, Microsoft Office applications, and
other common productivity tools.
11. Strong commitment to public service and proven ability to work
effectively with a diverse and multicultural population of faculty, staff,
students, and community members.
12. Record of successful management and leadership experience and
demonstrated commitment to staff development.
13. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to
communicate clearly in presentations.
14. Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to foster a
collegial work environment that encourages change and innovation; and
ability to interact effectively and work productively, collegially,
cooperatively, and collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups
in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
15. Ability to view issues from a campus wide perspective, foster
teamwork, and stimulate cross-functional collaboration.
16. Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, and implement new
information services.
17. Demonstrated ability to conceive and implement long-term strategies
and achieve short-term goals.
18. Desirable qualifications include a Masters degree in Art History;
supervisory experience; and a record of service to the profession.
