Mark et al,
My recollection, rather hazy, of a distant past is this: slide curators
(aka visual resources) often came to CAA, long before there was a VRA or
even an Arlis. Many of them were departmental and museum staff, not
librarians, and did not feel their problems were understood by or even
always respected by mainstream librarians, who were not involved in
teaching or in technical projection/photography problems, as slide
curators were. As an example, main entry, or creator, followed
not the Bible of the Library of Congress, but the needs or dictates of the
local museum director or department chairman or dean who was often, and
often rightly, unimpressed by LC practice in cataloging and form of name;
there were many small rough edges between the two groups at that time.
As libraries now become more involved with technology, and in the art
field with digital data banks and delivery of images, the two groups can
meld much more easily. Joint conferences would certainly be a financial
advantage for both organizations. It's certainly an important issue.
