Banff Perspectives #10 Don't Forget Your Camera!
May 3, 2006
As Banff Conference Session 10: Art in the Wilderness reminds us, among
the earliest enthusiasts to visit the area were photographers. They
lugged heavy equipment to impossible locations in order to record the
pristine views and majestic peaks that surrounded them. Our conference
attendees will have no such difficulties, but don't forget to bring your
cameras, especially if you can take panoramic views - this, of all
places will reward your efforts. And when you have taken photos of
Rundle Mountain, the Three Sisters peaks, the Bow Falls below the hotel,
the wild life, or the view of the Banff Springs Hotel rising above the
forest from across the river, then take some more pics just for fun.
You may have noticed our conference image at top left of our Web site, a
1930s CPR poster by James Crockart, promoting our hotel. We hope that
many of you will take photos at that same spot as a conference
souvenir: much the same beguiling view, from the same window, is still
there. At the Welcome Party/Opening Reception, among the door prizes
will be copies of Murder as a Fine Art, the Banff-based mystery
generously donated by Calgary author John Ballem and others: we would
love to have the art mystery aficionados among us hold up their copies
of the book in a group photo, or as individual pics, and add them to our
flickr site (with permission, of course - we're librarians!) as
documentation of our conference. Also at the Welcome Party, we will
have a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, in splendid and
iconic red serge, in attendance - that's just a few of the 'photo ops'
that await you - you will undoubtedly discover many more!
See you soon in our very own photographer's paradise!
PS The local Banff Transit Schedule, and a brief Banff Restaurant
Guide, have now been added to News & Updates on the Conference Web site.
