TRANSCONTINENTAL PERSPECTIVES
ARLIS/NA in the Canadian Rockies
Banff, Alberta, Canada
May 5-9, 2006
Banff Perspectives #6, Film Connections, March 3, 2006
With the Academy Awards just a day away, Banff Conference attendees
might be interested in the film connections of our conference venue. The
Canadian Rockies as a western setting have appealed to Hollywood since
Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddie, as Sgt. Bruce of the Mounties, sang
their most famous duet, Indian Love Call, in Rose Marie (1936). Since
then, some 100+ feature films have actually been filmed in the area.
See: http://www1.travelalberta.com/whatsnew/details.cfm?WhatsNewID=387).
Spring Time in the Rockies (1942), starring Betty Grable, was shot on
location near Lake Louise, while Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum,
starring in Otto Preminger’s River of No Return, filmed near Banff,
roughed it at our conference hotel, the Fairmont Banff Springs. The 70s
and 80s brought Little Big Man, and Superman (I, II, & III) to southern
Alberta and Calgary; the 90s brought Clint Eastwood in the Unforgiven
(1991), and Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall (1993), who was sighted in
Calgary again last summer with Angelina Jolie while shooting The
Assassination of Jesse James (not yet released). Most recently,
Brokeback Mountain, nominated for 8 Oscars including best picture, set
in Wyoming, was actually shot on location in foothills country southwest
of Calgary. Brokeback Mountain itself has been identified as a composite
shot that includes the peaks of the Three Sisters, mountains that
conference attendees will see on their way between Calgary and Banff,
while the Ranchman’s, a honky tonk bar in Calgary, was a stand-in for
the same where Jack meets Lureen.
While we can't compete with the Academy Awards, our conference program
includes the Saturday afternoon, no fee Workshop #9: Postcards from the
Edge: Reference and Instruction for Film Studies; and Saturday's Film
Night (selections still to be determined), but film buffs Jane Devine
Mejia and Jill Patrick are working hard to assemble a unique mix of
recent, outstanding animated films and documentaries about art and
artists, selected from the award-winning films of Canada's National Film
board (www.nfb.ca/).
We look forward to seeing you in Banff, at our very own "spring time in
the Rockies"!
PS For those interested, the Registration Desk will have a few copies of
Swerve, 03/03/06, a newspaper supplement that has an extensive article
identifying Brokeback Mountain locations in Calgary and southern Alberta.
