Dear Colleagues,
The University Librtary System and Prof. Alison Stones (Professor, Dept.
of Art and Architectural History) have launched a new web site of images
of Chartres Cathedral. It is a groundbreaking site that includes images
of everything from exterior sculpture to stained gl;ass windows and
floor tiles. The work was done by Professor Stones with the assistance
of her graduate students. Many of the images were taken by Professor
Stones and her students. More than 3,000 images are included on this
web site, they are high-resolution and each is accompnaied by
descriptive information. Users can zoomin to examine intricate details
of the cathedral's architectue, the sculpture of its three major
portals, stained glass windows depicting stories of the Bible and the
Lives of the Saints, fragmentary wallpaintings, and illumination sfrom
two historic manuscripts used at the Cathedral. The Cathedral was
bombed during WWII, reducing most of its holdings to charred remains.
Although the image collection was originally designed and partially
funded by a University grant to directly support Stones' teaching in her
medieval art and architectural classes, the Web site is available to
anyone interested in studying this monument of western art and
architecture. The images offer a compelling and comprehensive look at
the rich architectural style of the cathedral and its fascinating
history. Though there are several dozen Web sites on ChartresCAthedral,
PItt's site is especially comprehensive and allows keyword searches that
can be performed over the descriptions that accompany each image.
The Web site is located at the following url:
