When Eleanor Antin was at the Dahesh last month for an artist's talk, I
was very surprised that there were only about a dozen of us in the
audience (including her husband and a couple with him, and the museum
host). Sure, she is a West Coast artist but I was still surprised at
the small turnout. Nancy Spero is giving an illustrated lecture on
January 5th on "Imaginary goddesses" in conjunction with their upcoming
show on "The legacy of Homer."
When I talked to some colleagues about the Antin audience, they
said "gosh, I'd have gone if I'd known about it." So I'm just passing
this on so you'll know about the Spero lecture ahead of time. By the
by, the Dahesh is also showing a clutch of Homeric films from "The fury
of Achilles" to "Troy" (yeah, the Brad Pitt one) to "Clash of the
titans" etc etc.
