Open Position Announcement- Associate Librarian
Full time, 37.5 hours/week
Overview of Library:
The Art Research and Reference Library of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts has just relocated to the museum's beautiful new wing designed by Michael Graves & Associates. Information about the Institute's new building and Library can found on its website at http://www.artsmia.org.
As a result of the museum's expansion project, the Institute will now have a superior Library research facility with greater capacity and easier access to reference materials and technological resources. The Art Research and Reference Library maintains a non-circulating collection of more than 55,000 volumes/periodicals and serves students, collectors, scholars, visitors, docents, and museum staff. Online research services are available for use in the Reading Room, while access to the Library's online public access catalog can be found at: http://library.artsmia.org/
Position Summary:
Working in consultation with the Head Librarian, the Associate Librarian will be responsible for the Library's technical services operations, which primarily includes: copy and original cataloging; LC classification; maintenance of the authority file; providing systems administration for the Voyager integrated online catalog; overseeing both cataloging and local systems procedures/policies manual; training Library staff, interns and volunteers in use of system as needed; actively assisting in interpreting and transferring manual and emerging workflow, such as acquisitions to the Voyager system; working with the IS and Interactive Media departments in overseeing system upgrades; facilitating Library research subscription database administration; and working with acquisitions. Must maintain an ongoing commitment to updating knowledge of professional cataloging practices and national standards for providing cataloging leadership in ensuring integrated access to an evolving range of formats,
Qualifications:
Education:
Required:
Masters Degree in Library Science (MLS) or Master of Science in Library and Information Science
from an ALA accredited Library School.
Preferred: B.A. in Art History or significant coursework.
Skills/Experience:
Required:
Strong demonstrated experience with progressive responsibility in working with Library cataloging functions and Library integrated systems administration.Good working knowledge of the AACR2R, MARC record, cataloging, LC classification, LC subject headings and OCLC's "Connexion" integrated cataloging service. Skilled in performing both copy and original cataloging as well as classification. PC proficiency, including e-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel. Good online searching skills.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex projects to completion. Efficient & flexible work style, attention to detail; excellent organizational and creative problem solving skills; team-oriented with strong ability to build positive relationships with staff and visitors.
Preferred:
Experience with the Voyager integrated library system, Microsoft Access proficiency, familiarity with metadata standards, such as The Dublin Core, previous work direction experience, art library experience with a museum background.
