WIGGLE & WAVE: PAINTINGS BY ROBERTA CROWN; SCULPTURE BY
BARBARA LUBLINER will open in the Art Center tomorrow, Thursday,
September 22, 5 - 8 pm. The artists will give a gallery talk 5 - 6 pm,
and a reception will immediately follow 6 - 8 pm.
In Wiggle & Wave, Crown's highly coloristic, powerful paintings dialogue with
Lubliner's playful sculptures made of found metal. Using different visual media,
each artist explores the tensions and resolutions, harmony and discord, and the
form and motion suggested by her subject. Crown, an alumna of Queens College
(BA, MA 1970) who has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad and
serves as Executive Coordinator of the Women in the Arts Foundation, focuses on
color and form in a series of works inspired by the sea. Lubliner, known for her
flexible postmodern approach to the figural tradition, is showing works in her "Tickle
Metal" series that all move, wiggle or vibrate. While exploring metal's linear
qualities, ability to activate space, and capacity to suggest form, the pieces, as
"metal amusements," invite participation and play.
The exhibition will stay on view through October 27.
The artists will present an illustrated lecture on Wednesday, October 19, 12:15-
1:30.
