I didn't get many responses to the question that I posed back in August
about NH vs TR. But thanks very much to those of you who did reply.
Your answers have been very helpful and I think that for now we will
stick to TR but try to clean it up a bit.
A number of people asked me to summarize the responses, so here's a cut
and paste of the replies that I recieved. I've noted the sending
library in case you want to contact them for further info.
If anyone else has thoughts on this matter, please reply to the list.
Thanks again. Sheila

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Photography NH classification versus TR

Hi. While doing a summer weeding project I discovered that our TR
Photography section is in total chaos. Books by the same "artistic"
photographer are located in several places. This is partly due to the
fact that in the past we weren't doing much in-house cataloguing or
checking. Before we undertake a clean-up project, I'm wondering how
many of you have undertaken a re-cataloguing project and moved Artistic
Photography into NH instead of TR?
Please reply to me off-list and I'll summarize the results if anyone is
interested.
Thanks, Sheila

RESPONSES:
> I am interested in the results, thank you. We began a reclassification
project last year from a few internal systems to LC scheme. We debated
the whole NH vs. TR issue and thought we would have more machine matches
if we expressed a preference for TR. I think at the time it was the right
choice for what we were doing, but our ears are always open about NH in
case we want to do a big project a few years down the line.

We have done it and against my objections, we have totally removed most
art related books from the classifications beyond Q. So, all TT and TR
have been given new classification codes.
The reason behind this, was that we are a special library, with only art
and engineering books on different floors and the administration felt
very strongly about separating the books. Many years later, still
bothers me. I felt it was good for the art students to browse on the
engineering floor.

TR does not try to keep all works by a photographer. If some of the
books are exhibition catalogs (TR647), others are collections (TR653,
654, 655), and others are specific genres (TR680 for portraits,
say), "normal" LC practice would be to put the books with the subject.
This is the same as other artistic media. For example, a printmaker who
did woodcuts, lithographs, engravings, and etchings, the work would be
spread about the media.
If you don't want to reclass everything to NH but do want to keep works
by individual photographers together, you could consider using TR140.
The section of TR considered "artistic" is arbitrary since several
genres we'd mostly consider artistic are in the applied section anyway.
There are a number of formulas for keeping artists in one place, as you
probably know. LC does not use that model for any media ... though
strangely they do do collocation for literary authors (unless the
author works in more than one language).

Hi. I decided not to because I can't go back and convert the others.
Besides our collection is rather small, and our books on /by individual
photographers are shelved alphabetically by artist's surname; so that
keeps it easy to shelve & access. Good luck.
