STATE
Political Art Removed from California Display
by Brendan Coyne
Aug 26 - Citing "concerns about the current situation in the Middle
East," California’s attorney general opted last week to pull three
pieces of art from a state Justice Department exhibit held in the
building’s independently-operated café. State conservative groups had
protested the pieces.
One painting in particular – an image of the United States flag sliding
into a toilet – prompted the most criticism. Artist Stephen Pearcy,
creator of the flag painting, equated California Attorney General Bill
Lockyear’s action to censorship, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The works now hang in a hallway away from the restaurant.

* California Republicans Seek Removal of Anti-Bush Artwork (Jul 21, 2005)
"The decision to move it was based on the content and the viewpoint
being expressed," Pearcy insisted.
In late July, conservative media personalities and the state Republican
Party called on Lockyear to remove the flag painting, "T’anks to Mr.
Bush," from the exhibit. Groups circulated a petition and held protests
outside the building.
Lockyear’s office said the protests had nothing to do with the decision
to pull the three paintings from public display. The other two paintings
carried potent political messages as well. One reportedly depicts Bush
driving a church-shaped tank and the other is emblazoned with the
statement, "Palestine – Stop US-Financed Genocide in the Middle East."
The exhibit, "Creative Merger," is sponsored by the Justice Department,
California Arts Council, California Lawyers for Art and the Side Bar
Café, the installation’s site. Prior to the Justice Department showing,
the artwork was displayed at the Sacramento County Public Law Library.

California State Fair's - California Arts Day - October 7, 2005
The California State Fair's arts day was just the precursor to the big
event in the fall--the annual "California Arts Day" on Friday October 7.
Arts Day was created five years ago to recognize the role that the Arts
such as music, theater, visual art, poetry, and dance among others play
in California.
"Every time I speak to people I ask them, 'Can you imagine a world
without art?'" says Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts
Council. "California Arts Day is the perfect day to celebrate the arts.
Everyone can participate--professional artists, children, and ordinary
citizens who can't sing a note or draw a tree, but who love the arts
anyway and want to support them in schools and communities."
Please slate Friday, October 7, on your calendars for the fifth annual
event. The CAC will post updates on the website and in this e-newsletter
throughout the summer. Museums, libraries, theaters, schools, art
centers and other venues are expected to participate.
If you have an idea for California Arts Day and would like to submit it
to the CAC, please email Mary Beth at [log in to unmask] with the
subject heading "California Arts Day idea."

vision of a diverse community that is not conceived in binary terms
(i.e., black/white, male/female, gay/straight); The organization’s
vision "(a)eromestizaje," is a contemporary, aerodynamic, ethereal and
sex positive interpretation of "mestizaje," the Spanish word used to
describe the essence of Latin American and Filipino culture, which
evolved over many generations of colonialism as a result of the
processes of slavery and labor migration that led to the "mixture" of
Spanish Catholicism, indigenous native, African, Asian cultures.

The Harvey Milk City Hall Memorial
Visit: www.milkmemorial.org
In January 2003, San Francisco Supervisor Matt Gonzalez proposed
establishing a donation drive to place a memorial to slain Supervisor
Harvey Milk to honor Harvey's contributions to the City of San
Francisco. As one of the nation's first openly-gay elected officials,
and an unabashed radical, Harvey Milk transformed City Hall and the
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community in the historic moment of his
election then galvanized it with the tragedy of his death.
The memorial will be similar in likeness to the bronze sculptures of
historic figures and former San Francisco Mayors which grace the halls
of San Francisco's resplendent City Hall. It is designed to incorporate
this important historical figure into the art history of the City of San
Francisco and the world as the first-ever depiction of an openly gay
individual to be permanently placed in a civic institution
Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project
The Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) promotes the
creation and exhibition of films and videos that address social and
political issues and that reflect the experiences, stories and lives of
queer women of color (i.e., African American, Asian American, Latina,
Mixed-Race, Native American and/or Pacific Islander lesbians or
bisexuals). We implement our mission by conducting free 16-week
workshops that provide low-income queer women of color access to
professional-quality training and equipment, and by organizing an annual
film festival that enables emerging media artists to reach their target
audience. Through our programs, we intend to build a vibrant community
of queer women of color media artists.

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the
citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a
double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the
mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the
blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no
need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry,
infused with fear and blinded with patriotism, will offer up all of
their rights unto the leader, and gladly so. How do I know? For this
is what I have done. And I am Caesar." - William Shakespeare
