Subject: [queerart] Re: IMPORTANT: Freedom of Speech Under Attack; CSUSB
President to Give Talk on Free Speech
Dear All:
Yes, another day and another mass e-mail. But, this
is very important!
Today, Tuesday, May 31 at 6.00PM in California State
University, San Bernardino's (CSUSB) Visual Art
Building in room 101, the President of CSUSB will be
giving a talk and then moderate floor discussion on
the importance of free speech and academic freedom.
This university -- as well as others across the
Nation, esp. LGBT studies and Women's/Gender Studies
-- have been attacked for promoting and securing the
freedom of speech. Furthermore, CSUSB Professors and
Adjunct Faculty have been *outed* by the *Young
Republicans* on Campus: fliers stating that this or
that Professor discusses gender and sexuality (how
horrid!), and/or this or that Professor shows
pornography (canonical art i guess is pornography
now). This, as most of you know, happened to me at
Chaffey College, and the College caved into the ultra
right-wing (fascist) desires.
I know this is short notice, but I hope that you can
attend -- it is important to show support for the
freedom of speech and academic freedom to explore,
research, and ask dangerous questions (map:
http://www.csusb.edu/b_maps_dir.asp). And, if you
cannot attend then contact the University President
and state that you support his promotion and
protection of freedom of speech and academic research
(http://www.csusb.edu/president/)
This is a marvelous university with many talented and
gifted students and faculty who may end up in horrid
positions because of the ultra right-winged views of a
few. I applaud the University President for this
action -- showing support for freedom in and around
the University.
Indeed, these are (increasingly) dangerous day, and to
say what you think is to dig your own grave, but do we
have a choice at this crucial moment in the re-playing
of the *culture wars*? No city, no University, no
district can be ignored. Freedom of speech and
academic freedom must be protected and promoted --
everywhere!
Best, Robert
