Dear Colleagues,
I summarized the ARLIS-L discussion during April, took another poll on
ARLIS-L about GLIRT and sent the results to Ann Whiteside, ARLIS/NA EB
Liaison for GLIRT and Margaret WEbster, ARLIS/NA President.
The first email sent to ARLIS-L requesting that GLIRT be dissolved was
sent by one GLIRT member and signed by 11 other GLIRT members. The
subsequent ARLIS-L poll I conducted resulted in 5 GLIRT members voting to
dissolve GLIRT now and 15 GLIRT members voting to continue GLIRT. One one
of the 15 had previously signed the original petition to dissolve.
I have recently received a message from Ann Whiteside telling me that GLIRT
will continue IF we do some substantial work during the next ten months
before our business meeting at the 2006 Banff conference. She also
stated that if at any time GLIRT decides to change or absolve, the EB
will respond as appropriate.
As your GLIRT Moderator for 2005-2006, I have the following ambitious
agenda and welcome all participation, including that of new members! Here
is what I would like us to achieve prior to the Banff conference:
Write and submit all reports required of the ARLIS/NA EB by deadline. My
calendar is marked.
Begin a new GLIRT list-serv that will allow us to communicate with each
other regarding GLIRT and related issues. This will soon be mounted at
Pitt and I will issue an announcement on ARLIS-L when it is available.
Forward relevant messages from gay-related groups in professional
organizations will help keep GLIRT memebrs abreast of what's happening in
the country.
Have a clearly stated and previously announced agenda with substantial
topics of interest to GLIRT at our 2006 business meeting in Banff. I will
issue a call for agenda items a month prior to the conference.
I have submitted a program proposal for the 2006 Banff conference --
"AskARLIS about GLIRT" -- with the goal of inviting a debate about the
need for something like GLIRT within ARLIS/NA. Since this is a proposal,
it will undergo scrutiny by the conference program chairs and may or may
not be accepted. I have every hope that the program committee will
realize the need for this session in light of the recent discussion about
GLIRT's existence. I will let you know as soon as I learn whether or not
it has been accepted. Future program proposals could be tied into to
issues facing WomArt and other ARLIS/NA groups, like Collection
Development, etc.
Do something substantial and measureable to recruit new members, including
women, into the group. I will issuse a call for ideas about this via the
new list-serv.
The GLIRT web site is currently being updated and will soon be remounted
and then linked to the AWS. I am working with a Pitt grad student in
Library Science to make this happen. It should be available within two
weeks. It is now more important than the web site was when we previously
had it. Why? Because the last issue of UPDATE is now in press. It will
no longer be published. Again, I will announce its availablity via the
new list-serv.
GLIRT AWS will include updated bibliographies of gay-related art books and
workplace issues as well as the regular links of officers, mission,
history of the group, annual reports, programs sponsored (1993-2005),
links to gay art-related and professionally related web sites, etc. I
will issue a call for suggestions of what would be useful to us as
librarins - - Sherman Clarke's web page, for example, that covers CAA's
Queer Art Caucus and also his listing of gay-related subject headings.
And Queer Art Resources, et al. I will work with Carol Graney (AWS News
and Feature Editor) and John Taormina (Resources Editor of AWS) to make this
happen.
Work with GLIRT members to see what we can do to meet ARLIS/NA goals
stated in the Strategic Plan and the Core Competencies. This will not be
difficult or extremely time consuming on any one person's part. I will
issue a call for ideas on the new list-serv and already have several of my
own.
Work with the ARLIS/NA NARC to see if we could invite CAA's Queer Caucus
for Art, SAA's gay group and AAM's gay group to be affiliated members of
ARLIS/NA's GLIRT.
Work with the ARLIS/NA funding committee and the EB to attempt to locate a
source of annual funding for a GLIRT travel award to attend the ARLIS/NA
conference. Several GLIRT members can not attend the conference due to
lack of travel funds. I will issue a call for ideas via the new
list-serv.
Have a social gathering at each ARLIS/NA conference that is announced to
all members and scheduled on the conference calendar. CAA's Queer Caucus
has a reception at each conference, giving members an opportunity to meet
informally and encouraging another opportunity to communicate with each
other besides the business meeting. This will begin at the Banff
conference in 2006.
Work with GLIRt members on a provocative group of events for the 2007
Atlanta conference. I hope that could include a substantial business
meeting, a provocative and stimulating program about gay-related public
service issues and needs in libraries, an exciting social event and EVEN a
gay-related art exhibition or mini-event somewhere in the city!
GLIRT will be better able to decide whether to change its format or
dissolve at the 2007 Atlanta conference after we have had a year of open
discussion, an opportunity for broader debate (if our program proposal for
Banff is accepted) and an opportunity to feel what I sincerely hope will
be a sense of goodwill during the forthcoming debate as well as renewed
energy and passion about GLIRT.
Thanks very much,
