Dear Miguel and colleagues:
As one of those who did attend the GLIRT business meeting in Houston
and as the one who perhaps pushed the pebble off the top of the hill of
dissolution after that meeting, your message has made me think even
more seriously about the role of round tables in ARLIS in general, and
GLIRT specifically.
As Ted said in his message to ARLIS-L, one of the major roles of round
tables in the past was sponsoring programs. That is no longer a
requirement but they can continue to provide a group with some kind of
common interest a chance to discuss thoughts about potential programs
for the coming year. At the GLIRT meeting, there was virtually no
discussion of potential conference programs.
We have talked about a GLIRT web page in the past but it hasn't
happened. I think this is primarily because it was always an added
chore for folks, not central to their job. Several librarians,
including you, Miguel, have done nice resource pages that cover the
territory for queer art resources and access to them. There are also
associations and institutions that have fantastic web pages on such
resources. There is no need for us to continue to pursue a GLIRT web
page of resources when this is not needed.
It seems to me there are objective reasons to consider the dissolution
of GLIRT. I am not one of those that easily quits on any organization
or effort, nor finds it easy to throw anything out just because I can't
think of a use at the moment. I am proud of GLIRT's accomplishments
over its 15 years in ARLIS/NA -- the panels, especially. Nonetheless, I
think the time is here to dissolve GLIRT. At least one other round
table has dissolved in the last couple years and reformed as a
discussion group. I'm not sure whether that makes more sense for GLBTQ
efforts within ARLIS/NA.
Sincerely,
Sherman Clarke
