I think it's astounding and wonderful that librarians are arguing because
both art librarians and special collections want the artists' books! It
wasn't that long ago that nobody wanted them.
As far as asking the kids to put on white cotton gloves to handle them--
I'd advise against it. I've seen more books damaged as a result of the
insensitivity of the gloves than the dirt on the hands. It's better to
have them wash their hands before handling the books. If a washroom isn't
nearby, have a stock of the little tea-bag size packets of wipes on hand.
Not only is it better for the books, it's better for the aesthetic
experience of the books.
