Please join the Santa Monica Museum of Art in celebrating the extraordinary
life and career of legendary curator Walter Hopps (1932-2005) on May

The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with remarks by Elsa Longhauser, executive

Menil Collection; and artist George Herms. Starting at 7 p.m. there will be
music from Roberto Miranda; light refreshments will be served.
The event is free and open to the public; no reservations are required.
There will also be a celebration in Houston on May 17 at The Menil
Collection. For information about the May 17 event, please contact Vance
Muse, The Menil Collection, 713 525-9404.
Walter Hopps, Founding Director of The Menil Collection, was recognized
internationally for his inventive and groundbreaking exhibitions. In 1957
with Edward Kienholz, Hopps founded Ferus Gallery, a Los Angeles exhibition
space that took a seminal role in the development of contemporary art in
California. In 1962 he curated the first museum exhibition of Pop Art, "New
Painting of Common Objects," and over the next three years he assembled the
first retrospectives of Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell and the first
American retrospective of Kurt Schwitters. His influential and far ranging
curatorial achievements include the 1965 São Paulo Bienal, where he
presented the art of Barnett Newman and six other artists, including Frank
Stella and Robert Irwin; the 1972 Venice Biennale, where he included the
challenging photography of Diane Arbus, the first Biennale presentation of
photography as an art form; and the landmark 1991 exhibition "Robert
Rauschenberg: The Early 1950s," organized for The Menil Collection.
Throughout his distinguished career, Hopps maintained his close and
committed relationships with artists.
Located at Bergamot Station, G1, 2525 Michigan Avenue, Santa Monica, SMMoA
is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Sunday, Monday,
