I am curious what ARLIS members think about the field
of visual studies and its relationship to art history.
More specifically, do you see graduate programs in
visual studies as providing a valuable degree in terms
of art librarianship? Or do you feel that a master's
degree in art history is the (only) way to go? What
future do you see for information professionals
working with both types of programs?
I gather there is some debate in academic circles
whether visual studies will become an umbrella-like
discipline encompassing art history, popular culture,
etc. (it looks as if a few programs in the UK are
going this route) or if art history will maintain
itself as a separate discipline, aided by its own
traditions and history.
For examples of visual studies programs, see:

Rochester:

Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago:

You might notice that besides just being curious, I am
looking for some advice on future career and education
choices.
