ALUMNAE  BEVERLY ALLEN APPOINTED TO NATIONAL MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES BOARD

The U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Beverly Allen to serve as a member of the National Museum and Library Services Board on November 20, 2004.  Allen was nominated, with six other nominees, by President Bush to sit on the board which advises the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and makes recommendations for the National Award for Museum and Library Service. 
 
The newly structured board resulted from the Museum and Library Services Act signed by President Bush in September of 2003.  One facet of the act stipulated the streamlining of the agency administration; thus, drawing together representatives from museum and library communities to form one advisory board.
 
Beverly E. Allen, MSLS, is the former Director of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) Multi-Media Center. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and her master of library science degree from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. In 1976, she joined the faculty of MSM, where her charge was to develop a health sciences library for a new medical school, including all aspects of planning, implementation, management, operation, and personnel. Allen has served as a past Regent of the National Library of Medicine and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Medical Library Association, American Association of Health Sciences Libraries, American Library Association, and AAMC Group for Information Resources.

OVER $5 MILLION IN RESEARCH GRANTS SINCE JULY 1, 2005
 
The faculty at the School of Information Studies has been awarded over $5 million in grants since the commencement of the new fiscal year.  The grants from a wide variety of prestigious foundations and institutions are indicative of the far reaching, interdisciplinary research conducted by the school.  The newly acquired funding ranks the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University as one of the top information schools in the nation for sponsored research and its faculty tops the list of per capita sponsored research within the university.

AN IST PROFILE:  ELIZABETH LIDDY

Dr. Elizabeth D. Liddy is a Professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University and Director of its Center for Natural Language Processing, where she leads a team of 15 researchers focused on developing human-like language-understanding software technologies. Liz's research has been continuously focused on applying linguistic theories and technologies to improving information access since her dissertation research in 1988 that won 3 prestigious international awards for pioneer work in the successful application of linguistic theory to information retrieval. 
Since that time, Liz has successfully applied Natural Language Processing to information access technologies, such as: data-mining, question-answering, automatic multiple-document summarization, cross-language retrieval, knowledge management, and 2-stage web-based retrieval. Her technology has been applied in the domains of business, banking, alternative medicine, patents, travel, public health, international security, crisis management, engineering, and education..
 
Liz has also been recognized for her entrepreneurship.  In 1994 she started TextWise, a software company that developed technology to provide clients with better information access.  For her work, Liz has been honored with the National Tibbetts Awards from the United States Small Business Administration, the Enterprise award for Technology from the Upstate New York Technology Business Forum, and the Award of Innovation for Excellence in Entrepreneurship from SU's School of Information Studies.
 
Liz's leadership and expertise have earned her recognition in academia, as well.  She is one of only six Trustee Professors at Syracuse University and is a fellow of SU's Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship, where she shares her experiences with classes.  Her research achievements include 90 published technical papers, seven patents in the area of Natural Language Processing, and over $13 million in research grants. 
 
Concerned by the small number of women in her profession, Liz founded and continues to act as mentor and advisor for Women in Information Technology, a student group in the School of Information Studies that is focused on ensuring the success of female students as they pursue technology degrees, and go on to careers within the IT field. 
 
Liz continues to teach courses in the School of Information Studies on Information Retrieval, Data Mining, and, of course, Natural Language Processing.

BETSEY VAN DER VEER MARTENS CO-WINNER OF ALISE EUGENE GARFIELD DISSERTATION AWARD
 
Recent School of Information Studies doctoral graduate Betsy Van der Veer Martens was honored with the 2005 ALISE Eugene Garfield Dissertation Award for her dissertation Theories at Work: Functional Characteristics of Theories
That Facilitate Their Diffusion Over Time.  The dissertation contributes to research on scientific communication by a comparative case study of the "careers" of eight different theories in the social sciences over a period of approximately twenty years.
 
The criteria for the award were based on: significance of the research problem to the overall LIS field; presentation of the relevant literature; design of the study (i.e., appropriateness of methodology, selection of specific techniques and/or tests); conduct of study (i.e., application of methods of data collection); analysis and presentation of the data (i.e., quality of analysis, logic of findings); appropriateness of conclusions; clarity and organization of the writing.

FUTURE PROFESSORIATE FOR LIBARIANSHIP PROJECT
 
The Future Professoriate for Librarianship Project in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University establishes a program focused on recruiting and enculturating doctoral students to library research, teaching, and service. The Fellowships provide full tuition, stipend and benefits for PhD students pursuing Librarianship topics. Fellowships are available only for US citizens or permanent residents.
