Reference Librarian, Fine Arts Library
The University of British Columbia Library is one of the largest research
libraries in Canada. It is a depository library for publications of the
governments of BC, Canada, and elsewhere. The University of British
Columbia is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the city's
West Side of Point Grey. The University Endowment Lands are situated to
the east of the campus proper, and serve as a "green belt" between the
city and the campus.
Only 30 minutes from the heart of downtown Vancouver, the spectacular
University of British Columbia campus is a "must see" for any visitor to
the city. The University boasts some of the city's finest attractions,
including the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Centre for the Arts, and
the UBC Botanical Garden.
Overview of the position: The UBC Library requires an innovative, flexible
and energetic librarian to work in the Fine Arts Division. The incumbent
will provide reference services, assume collection development
responsibilities, liaise with the faculty and provide instruction in a
broad spectrum of disciplines which include services to the Department of
Art History, Visual Art and Theory, the School of Architecture and the
School of Community and Regional Planning.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in an environment with
multiple demands and projects and will be integral to the move of the
Division into the Irving K. Barber Learning Center in the spring of
2005. A background that demonstrates high energy, productivity and
success in change management are highly desirable. The librarian may be
responsible for the organization and operation of services within the
parameters of the Library's operational policy and the position reports to
the Assistant University Librarian - Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences. The nature and scope of the responsibilities for this position
are expected to change as the Library organization evolves.
Qualifications and requirements: A graduate degree from an accredited
program in Library or Information Science and a major or honours
undergraduate degree in Fine Arts with an interest in architecture and
community and regional planning or equivalents of education and
experience, together with a reading knowledge of French and at least one
other foreign language, preferably German or Italian. Familiarity with
computer technology and electronic services are required. A commitment to
responsive and innovative service, excellent interpersonal and
communication skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of a
team are essential. Supervisory experience is highly desirable.
Evening or weekend work will be required.
Terms of Appointment: This is a continuing position. If eligible and
qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed
appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary
appointment. Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the
second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to
grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and academic/professional
qualifications. Due to budget limitations and salary constraints
application from candidates for this position is limited to those with up
to 10 years of experience.
