Position Announcement: Assistant Librarian, Winterthur Library
Located on almost a thousand acres just North of Wilmington Delaware,
Winterthur An American Country Estate, is the former home of Henry
Francis du Pont. The Winterthur Library was established in 1952 to
support research in the American decorative arts and material culture.
It has become a recognized center for advanced study and is dedicated to
the understanding and appreciation of America's artistic, cultural,
social, and intellectual history from colonial times into the twentieth
century. The Library is a member of the Research Libraries Group and
the Independent Research Libraries Association. The Winterthur Library
Printed Book & Periodical Collection contains more than 70,000 volumes
in open stacks and about 17,000 rare American and European imprints in
closed stacks. The strength of this collection is the documentation of
American household goods and their use, decorative arts and design, and
the material culture of everyday life in America from the 17th through
the early 20th centuries. In addition to monographs, rare books, and
trade catalogues, the Printed Book & Periodical Collection offers
currently published periodicals as well as auction and exhibition

The Winterthur Library seeks a service oriented Assistant Librarian to
provide reference and public services to library users, including
Winterthur staff, students, research fellows, visiting scholars,
volunteers and the general public. He/she assists in developing and
presenting instruction sessions for library users on library resources
as well as library tours and orientations. He/she also provides library
public services such as rare book photocopying and scanning, processing
photoservices requests and paging rare books, in addition to assisting
with technical services by performing preorder searching, creating order
records and performing copy cataloging. The Assistant Librarian
coordinates all library loans and oversees course reserves and library
circulation.
Minimum Qualifications: BA or BS in history, art history or related
field and an ALA-accredited MLS. 2 years library experience, including
public service and reference experience, with some experience using an
integrated library system such as Virtua, Voyager, Millenium, or other
product. Knowledge of reference resources - both print and electronic
- for the Humanities; knowledge of MARC format; familiarity with
automated library systems; detail-oriented, organized, good
interpersonal and communication skills, good computer skills, excellent
customer service skills, able to prioritize competing tasks.
