Thank you all very much for your responses to my two queries regarding
the digitization of picture collections. The feedback I've gotten has
been very helpful to our internal discussions on this topic.
A number of you asked for a summary so here it is. I've abstracted each
response and removed identifiers but did indicate the type of
institution for each response.
Thanks again.

College of Design:
88,000 in collection; circulates overnight, 12 at a time; 20,000
circulate per year; beginning to digitize to provide better access; no
plans to remove cabinets; will continue to develop collection; are
subscribing to Corbis Education

24 filing drawers; not actively developing; students looking for online
resources; admin vacancies putting any projects on hold
Art Institute:
Developed large, sophisticated project in FMP
University Dept. of Art & Archaeology:
300K collection; 240K gifted to local HS; will digitize selections of
remainder; using software developed in-house; believes students would
prefer digital format
Studio School:

collection into studios; not considering digitizing as students are
studio-based
College of Art:

digitizing unless better quality images not available elsewhere
Art & Design Institute:

Digitizing 600 images for specific course; recently moved nine cabinets
back to collection from storage

on line; had grant $$; only images post 1922 digitized so all in public
