Reference Librarian (VMFA Assistant, #E0606)
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking a Reference Librarian for the Museum Library. The position performs a variety of Museum library support services, in technical as well as public service areas. Duties include staffing the Library's front desk, providing courteous and accurate assistance, information and reference service to visitors in their use of library materials for research. Answers art reference queries by telephone and e-mail, searching both Library and online resources. Is responsible for Interlibrary Loan transactions and for processing materials to be added to the collection and for serials maintenance. Maintains and updates automated auction catalogue acquisitions file. Supervises volunteers and/or interns. Oversees the Museum's records management program, coordinates and ensures the storage and retention of records.
Qualifications: The selected candidate will possess a working knowledge of integrated library systems and of art history and museum studies. Additional requirements include a demonstrated ability to supervise the work of volunteers; to provide reference assistance in an art research library environment; and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Knowledge of foreign languages, especially French, Italian and German, is helpful. A Masters in Library Science with coursework in art history and museum studies preferred or status as an MLS degree-seeking candidate. A security background check will be required.
Hiring salary: $30,957 with full benefits.
