Dear Miguel- thanks for these questions.
1. This IS NOT part of the Travel Awards Committee.
2. There is a separate NYC-based committee composed of members of the
Travel Awards Committee, Development Committee, International Relations
Committee and former Presidents. It was composed this way strictly as a
matter of convenience so we could meet in person one day in Dec. and select
all the recipients and not have to kill lots of trees photocopying all the
applications, fedexing them back and forth, etc. Any changes to the
composition of the committee would need to be approved by The Getty.
3. There will be an evaluation form for recipients to complete as part of
the review process and they will form part of the final report to The Getty.
4. The ARLIS/NA Executive Board is NOT providing matching funds for the
program to continue next year. Meeting in Canada may present different
financial opportunities.
5. This is a ONE-TIME Getty grant which must be used for this conference
only and cannot be carried over into next year.
6. The Mentoring Program Chair for Houston is Alba Fernandez-Keys who is
also a member of the Diversity Committee which you Co-Chair. I anticipate
that the Latin Americans will be assigned mentors as a matter of course,
the same as most foreign attendees to conferences. I expect you to sign up
to be a mentor!-)
7. I totally agree that this is a wonderful opportunity to involve
Diversity and International Relations Committees and expect there will be
many opportunities to involve the Latin American attendees in a variety of
programs and special interest groups beyond just lining them up and taking
their pictures.
8. You and other members of the Diversity Committee should volunteer to be
a mentor--you should should contact the conference Local Planning Chairs
about ways you think we can involve the awardees--you should volunteer to
translate any local guide materials into Spanish--you should volunteer for
the Hospitality desk--you should think about forming a group dinner--start
thinking now!-)
This opportunity will create many opportunities to interact with our Latin
American colleagues and I'm sure the Conference Planning Committee will
welcome volunteers who want to get involved!!-)
My role was strictly getting the funds to start the ball rolling--you must
get involved in order to make their time in Houston worthwhile!
Best,
Ted
