Google searches like "father and son artists,"
"mother and daughter artists," "mother and
son artists," and "artistic families" (as phrases,
in quotation marks) seemed to yield quite a few
hits, of living people. (There were far fewer
results for "father and daughter artists," and
not so many useful results for "artist families.")
The hit for the mother/daughter artists Clarissa
and Vanessa Parry claims that "The National Women's
Museum Fine Arts, in Washington D.C., Archives,
invited us to place our information on file in their
Mother/Daughter category." Presumably, they mean the
archives of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles recently
held an exhibition entitled "A Generation Apart :
Mothers + Daughters + Art." Other small venues,
like the North Shore Arts Association in Massachusetts,
have also had family shows, and have produced
exhibition catalogs and/or websites, or have gotten
coverage in the websites of local news media.
Searching LC's catalog with the subject heading
"Artists--Family relationships" brings up only one
book, in French: _Parenté et création : familles
d'artistes, de la relation personnelle à la
production collective_ by Sylvie Camet (1995).
The LC heading "Children of artists" didn't seem
too helpful.
A few parent/child artists -- with at least one of
the family members still working -- who come to mind
are:
- Pablo Picasso / Paloma Picasso (jewelry design)
- Betye Saar (assemblage) / Alison Saar (sculpture)
- Paul Stankard / Katherine Stankard Campbell (glass art)
- Camille Pissarro / Paul-Emile Pissarro / H. Claude
Pissarro / Lélia Pissarro (painting)
- Leo & Diane Dillon / Lee Dillon (illustration)
There are many more famous artist families, like the
Gentileschi, Bruegel, Peale, Manship, and Calder
families, but as the artistic members are deceased,
these probably don't count as "contemporary."
