THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental libraries. It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students,
participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff
development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in
numerous digital initiatives designed to provide access to a full array of
scholarly information. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative
Cataloging and contributes to the NACO and BIBCO Programs. For additional

Visual Resources and the Arts Library at Yale University
One of the five operating units of the Arts Library at Yale University (Art
and Architecture, Arts of the Book, Classics, Drama, and Visual Resources),
the Arts Library Visual Resources unit (ALVR) holds over 260,000 35-mm
slides, 60,000 lantern slides, 190,000 mounted photographs, and a growing
collection of over 40,000 digital images made available on the campus
network primarily through the Luna Insight interface. The ALVR serves the
Yale arts area community by providing current course support in the form of
slide and digital image production for classroom and study use. The ALVR
also serves the Yale community outside of the arts by making its collections
available for classroom and lecture use. The ALVR currently has a staff of 4

Responsibilities
Unit Management and Supervision: Reporting to the Director of the Arts
Library, manages the day-to-day operations of the ALVR unit, with a focus on
balancing the service needs of a growing collection of digital image files
with those of the historically-rich and still actively used collections of
slides and photographs pertaining to the arts and architecture. Manages the
daily activities of student and clerical staff. Supervisory activities
include hiring, training, scheduling, and overseeing all aspects of work
performed by the Library Services Assistant and student employees.
Coordinates unit activities with the Visual Resources Support Specialist for
cataloging, and the Visual Resources Support Specialist for the Electronic
Library Initiative (ELI) project. Works closely with the Director and other
ALVR staff to plan and implement process improvements for all ALVR
activities, implement changes to departmental policies and procedures, or to
devise and document new ones. Acts as the expert user for technology for the
ALVR. Reviews the unit budget with the Arts Library Director, and works with
the Library Services Assistant to ensure accurate and timely billing and
payment. Serves as the unit head in the absence of the Director. Course
Support: Working with the Director and other Arts Library and Visual
Resources staff, coordinates, prioritizes, and oversees all aspects of
course support services. Responsible for ensuring that course support
processing, whether analog or digital, is handled effectively and
efficiently, including assessing existing procedures and identifying
realistic workloads and the means to sustain them. Meets with faculty
seeking Insight support, acts as an ALVR faculty support contact, and
coordinates other ALVR staff acting in that capacity. Acts as the primary
ALVR contact for the Library Systems Office (Web and Workstation Support and
Digital Consulting Services) to ensure consistent access to Insight (client
and browser), or to troubleshoot and report problems. Responsible for the
Insight loading process, including documenting changes, training staff to
perform this function, and ensuring quality control. Works with the Arts
Library Public Services Librarian and others as needed to develop and update
ALVR information on the Arts Library website, and to provide support for
Insight instruction and other public services functions in the ALVR.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree required with a concentration in art history or a
closely allied subject strongly preferred. Supervisory experience required.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skill, and demonstrated ability to
work successfully in a highly collaborative environment. Strong public
services attitude/orientation. Excellent time management, organizational
skills and the ability to work productively under pressure. Working
knowledge of library systems and practices as well as digital imaging
technologies and database creation and management necessary. Website design
and management experience preferred. Experience with or general knowledge of
library or visual resources cataloging and indexing standards preferred.
Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages highly desirable.
Demonstrated proficiency with or ability to learn: Windows/Office operating
systems and applications, especially PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Image
management and presentation software, particularly Luna Insight and Extensis
Portfolio, Database management systems and the ability to transfer knowledge
and skills from one to the other [FileMaker Pro the current DB application],
Image manipulation software, especially Adobe PhotoShop and scanning
