Here in Miami, we have diversity plus librarian interns and trainees working
on MLS degrees as well as other staff with BA's in Art History and BFA's who
might be encouraged in art librarianship by an opportunity to attend the
conference.
As I grow long in the tooth, I'd really like to see a huge diverse pool of
young, enthusiastic, bright art librarians chomping at the bit to take over
caring for the MDPLS collection and curating exhibitions.

Hello Jeanne,
We're glad that ARLIS/NA wants to bring colleagues from Latin America to the
annual conference, but how about encouraging our own library students from
under-represented populations to become art librarians?
It doesn't make sense, $28,500 to provide assistance for a few participants
from Latin America who may or may not continue in the organization, versus
$500 for one student who is interested in the profession and hopefully
through their attendance and mentoring at the conference, can one day become
a part of it (http://www.arlisna.org/diversity_award.html).
We do not see this as an either/or choice, but feel that the allocation of
funds is less encouraging than it could be for a new generation of art
librarians, whom we would like to welcome warmly with generous support from
our organization.
