The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental libraries. It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the

participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff

manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,

MANUSCRIPTS AND ARCHIVES
Manuscripts and Archives advances teaching and research by making primary
source materials available for study and is open to the public. For over
five decades, the department has assembled more than 20,000 linear feet of
manuscript collections, donated by individuals and organizations, which
document intellectual, legal, social, religious, political, diplomatic, and
economic history, and the history of Yale University. The department also
houses the University archives and related materials.
RESPONSIBILITIES
In a dynamic and changing environment, the incumbent reports to and works
under the general supervision of the Head of Public Services and is
responsible for a wide range of managerial duties relating to the operation
of the Cowles Reference Center and the reading room in Manuscripts and
Archives. These public services functions serve a broad range of users
including University faculty, students, and staff, as well as visiting
researchers.
Directly supervises a staff of clerical and technical employees, students,
and casual workers. Makes recommendations on hiring staff. Trains,
evaluates, disciplines, and terminates staff. Motivates and coaches staff
to deliver and improve services.
Performs a wide range of managerial duties, including but not limited to:
setting priorities, planning workflow, resolving problems, interpreting and
monitoring policies, administering budgets, gathering statistics, and
generating reports. Ensures expeditious and effective responses to all
reference inquiries, timely delivery of collection materials to the reading
room from on-site and off-site shelving areas, security of materials in use,
and provision of reliable and efficient reprographic services. Establishes,
maintains, and seeks ways to improve high service standards for responsive,
friendly, reliable and efficient public services that assist readers in the
use of the department’s facilities and collections. Ensures all public
services support functions conform to policies and guidelines. Participates
in the formulation of unit and departmental policy and procedures. Writes
documentation and maintains public services manuals. Provides reference
service to patrons in person, through e-mail, and over the telephone.
Participates in library-wide planning and committee work as appropriate and
consults and works with staff outside of the department. Provides
operational support for departmental exhibits. Acts as liaison with
preservation and reproduction services and maintains exhibit supplies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training,
skills and experience. A minimum of three years of relevant work
experience, including supervisory experience. Strong public services
orientation and successful experience working with the public. Ability to
manage a broad variety of tasks and shifting priorities in a changing
environment and to give careful attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to
supervise effectively in a collaborative, team environment. Demonstrated
ability to handle stressful situations, solve problems, and exhibit
tolerance and patience with a diversity of readers. Experience using office
software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and
electronic mail to achieve efficiencies. Excellent analytical,
organizational, oral and written communications skills. Demonstrated
ability to work effectively with colleagues and administrators.
Preferred: Experience supervising in a unionized environment, managing a
budget, and accounting for cash flow. Experience in an academic, archival,
library, or museum setting. Experience using an automated library
management system. Experience with exhibit management. Experience in
project management. Experience using relational database software
applications.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's
qualifications and experience. Full benefits package including 22 vacation
