Dear Colleagues,
"Decoration in the Age of Napoleon: Empire Elegance Versus Regency
Refinement" is now on view at the Edna Barnes Salomon Gallery (Room 316) at
the 42nd Street Research Library. Dates are September 3, 2004 - April 2,
2005 (yes, I know it's a long run). The exhibition features 172 rare
pattern books, plates, prints and original designs, mainly from the NYPL
Art & Architecture Collection, and features materials from the private
library of architect Thomas Hastings that delineate the Empire and Regency
Styles. Also featured are wonderful plates from the rarely seen Vinckhuisen
Collection of Military Costume, and the exhibition explores the stylistic
rivalry between France and England during the turbulent years of the
Napoleonic Wars.
The brochure is simply splendid and a mailing has gone out to NYC area art
libraries and schools. I will attempt to extend that mailing, but if you're
outside NYC and would like a brochure, contact me by e-mail directly and I
will send some out.
An article entitled "The Regency Style's Debt to Napoleon" appears in this
October's issue of the Magazine Antiques, and features 11 plates of items
from Art & Architecture that were digitized by our NYPL Digital Program.
For those of you in the NYC metro area, or planning to visit, I can also
offer comic relief in the form of a series of lectures on the exhibition.
All will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the South Court Classroom B on
the following dates:
Wednesday, September 29
Wednesday, October 27
Wednesday, November 24
Thursday, December 2 (the 200th anniversary of Napoleon's coronation!)
Wednesday, December 22
Wednesday, December 29
I promise to be humorous and have some lovely slides to show.
And since this a commercial world, after all, I conclude by telling you
that several nice products were made in conjunction with the exhibition and
are available in the Library Shop!
many thanks,
Paula A. Baxter
