Once again, its time to learn from the collective wisdom of the list.
I'm trying to develop a best practices/guidelines for what types of materials should be in a vertical file collection, and what shouldn't (or would be better served in some other fashion). Rather than reinvent the wheel, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to share with me their guidelines on what your institution includes in its artist/vertical files.
Some specifics I'd be interested in knowing include (but are not limited to):
1) Does number of pages play into the decision,
2) Is the percentage of images a factor (i.e. 25 p., but all illus. = VF; but 25 p. of text = item level cataloging),
3) Do clippings about art from non-art (or non-art indexed) periodicals merit inclusion?
4) How is access to these materials provided? On-line? Master list of names in a word document? Only by looking through the files? Etc.
Any insight that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
Please feel free to contact me off list ... and thank you all in advance.
