The Princeton University Library, one of the world's most distinguished
research libraries, seeks an energetic and imaginative librarian to oversee
the holdings, resources, and staff of its Graphic Arts Collection located in
the Harvey S. Firestone Library. The position manages a significant
collection of books, prints and drawings, photographs, fine bindings, and
realia, as well as the Sinclair Hamilton Collection of American Illustrated
Books. The librarian also advises the Department regarding the management
and description of other visual resources located throughout the Department
of Rare Books and Special Collections. The librarian works collegially with
the staff of the Princeton University Art Museum. The librarian is also a
main participant in the Library’s active program of changing exhibitions,
especially giving oversight to exhibition installations.

Description: The Graphic Arts Librarian is one of six full-time and several
part-time professional positions responsible for developing, preserving, and
interpreting collections in Princeton's Department of Rare Books and Special
Collections. Responsibilities include collection development, reference
services, active participation in user instruction, preparing exhibitions
and publications designed to educate and involve users on campus and beyond,
establishment and management of cataloging and conservation priorities, and
active engagement with donors and fundraising. The librarian also develops
on-line content, such as web-based finding aids, on-line exhibitions, and
other digital initiatives. Currently the position oversees two support staff
persons. The librarian will also participate in and help to manage an
on-going effort to address longstanding acquisitions and cataloging backlogs
throughout the Department. The position may work some public service
evening or weekend hours.
Qualifications: Required: An ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science
degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience,
and at least three years' employment in a research library, museum or other
cultural repository are required. Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of
the history of graphic arts and of printed books, both in terms of course
work and/or through relevant publications and experience. The ability to
communicate clearly and effectively with faculty, donors, students and other
members of the Princeton University community is also mandatory. The
successful candidate must present evidence of training experience or
classroom instruction and development of on-line finding aids or other web
documents. Demonstrated ability and experience with the management of these
collections, including but not limited to: acquisitions, donor relations,
physical organization, cataloging, exhibition, publications, and reader
services. Extensive and current knowledge of current practices relating to
the identification, access, control, cataloging and digitization of visual
materials. These practices are those spanning a number of institutional
settings including art and historical museums as well as academic and rare
book libraries.
Preferred: Preference will be given to candidates with formal training and
achievements in organizing, exhibiting, and digitizing visual materials for
instructional uses. Candidates with a second master's or a doctorate in a
relevant discipline (e.g. art history, English literature) and some
experience with cataloging according to current bibliographic standards are
preferred. General familiarity with computer applications in special
collections, active participation in appropriate professional organizations,
and a record of successful supervisory responsibility are also desirable.
