FINE ARTS LIBRARIAN
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
Position Summary
Syracuse University Library seeks an energetic, team-oriented librarian
with excellent technological skills, a strong service orientation, and a
background in art or a related field to serve as a reference specialist
and selector for the fine arts, cinema, photography, the applied and the
decorative arts. Reporting to the Head, Fine Arts Department, this
individual also will provide reference, information, and instructional
services in the humanities and social sciences. As a member of the Fine
Arts Department, this individual will work with a team of three
librarians and six support staff in an active, student-centered research
library environment. This individual will also work under the direction
of the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development as a
member of a team of librarians responsible for collection development
activities. The SU Library uses Endeavor's Voyager system and
subscribes to hundred of electronic databases via Web-based services
including OCLC/First Search, RLIN, ProQuest, RLG and others. The SU
Library, with collections of nearly three million volumes, is actively
pursuing electronic and digital initiatives as part of its strategic
plan.
Assignment-Specific Responsibilities:
Reference Services
Provides a full range of general and multi-disciplinary information
services (including reference, outreach, consultative, and referral
services in person and for remote users);
Serves as subject specialist in assigned areas of the fine arts,
cinema, photography, the applied and the decorative arts for the purpose
of in-depth research support.
Instructional Services (Under the general direction of the Head of
Instructional Programs)
Develop and/or provide general group instruction for undergraduate and
graduate students, faculty, and staff.
Develop and/or provide specialized instruction in assigned areas: fine
arts, cinema, photography, the applied and the decorative arts.
Create and maintain library informational publications and
instructional tools in both print and electronic formats including web
pages and online tutorials.
Provide library tours and participate in other orientation as needed.
Collection Development
Build and manage collections in all formats for fine arts, cinema,
photography, the applied and the decorative arts.
Manage expenditure of assigned fund code allocations for monographs,
journals, serials, monographic series, media, as well as electronic
resources.
Manage an annual fund of over $120,000.
Collaborate with faculty members to develop relevant collections and
library services.
Fosters positive relations with faculty through visible, proactive
outreach and faculty liaison.
Create and manage subject pages for the SU programs for fine arts,
cinema, photography, the applied and the decorative arts.
Other Duties
Supervise the Architecture Reading Room's operations and performance
during the absence of the Architecture Librarian.
Serve as Library liaison to faculty in the Fine Arts Department
(College of Arts & Sciences), the College of Visual and Performing Arts
(CVPA) and other SU faculties teaching courses related to the arts.
Serve as Library liaison to the Independent Study Degree Program (ISDP)
in Visual Communications.
Serve as Library liaison to art students enrolled in the Division of
International Programs Abroad (DIPA) programs.
Contribute to the planning, organization and production of special
events for the Fine Arts Department and Library such as symposia,
lectures and exhibitions.

Contributes to Library planning and governance in order to respond to
the changing needs of clients.
Serves on departmental and Library committees and working groups as
appropriate.

Library clients.
Practices professional collaboration and collegiality in order to
maximize learning about libraries and contribute to the growing body of
professional knowledge.
Adheres to the University's, the Library's and the profession's
values.
Maintains awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices
to help the Library keep up with and prepare for future changes that
will improve service and organizational effectiveness.
Contributes to a comfortable, safe and secure environment for Library
clients and staff.
Required Qualifications
MLS (ALA) accredited in a library science related field; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in the arts or a related
field.
Facility in at least one foreign language.
AND the best combination of the following:
A second master's degree, preferably in an arts or related field.
Facility in more than one foreign language.
One year or more of professional experience providing reference or
public services in an academic library or research setting.
Experience with collection development in an academic or research
library.
Library instruction or classroom teaching experience.
Experience in the creation of subject web guides.
Knowledge of contemporary issues in reference and collection
development.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Exceptional computer-based skills or experience with digital
initiatives.
The ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a collegial,
multi-disciplinary team environment.
Evidence of professional and/or scholarly activity.

Salary and Benefits: Commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum salary $35,000; depends on education, experience and rank. The
