Hello Colleagues:

We in the ALA Office for Diversity hope that this summer is affording you at
least a few opportunities for personal and professional renewal. To aid in
that hope, we are providing you with information about a few programs,
websites of interest and links to resources that might assist you in
diversity related planning, programming and policy making.

If your organization has any diversity-related information or professional
tools to share please contact me in the Office for Diversity at

Upcoming Events

Conference: Building Organizational Strength Through Inclusion: The 2004
Diversity Conference
August 17-18, 2004, Embassy Suites Hotel, Dublin, Ohio 43017 (Columbus)

On August 17 and 18, the Ohio Library Council (OLC) will host the 2004
Diversity Conference that builds on a five-year tradition of heightening the
awareness of the library community to the changing nature of the people and
communities they serve. The conference will feature such outstanding
speakers as Josč Aponte, the director of Pikes Peak Library in Colorado;
Tracie Hall, director of the Office for Diversity and the Spectrum
Initiative; Raymond Santiago, the director of the Miami-Dade Public Library;
and Natasha Tarpley, popular author of children's books that celebrate
African-American culture.

Martín Goméz, the incoming President of the Urban Libraries Council, will
speak at the annual Ohio Dinners for Spectrum on August 17. OCLC will
underwrite all costs of the dinner, so that every ticket sold is a
contribution to the Spectrum Scholarship Initiative of the American Library
Association. There will also be a showing of the film "Flag Wars" about
culture clash in a gentrifying neighborhood of Columbus. This film, which
premiered on the PBS series "POV," is a powerful documentary that has
sparked considerable debate about urban change. Registration for the dinner
is separate from the conference, and is available at
http://www.oclc.org/news/announcements/announcement101.htm.

Celebrate your commitment to diversity at OLC's 2004 Diversity Conference!
For more information or to register, go to http://www.olc.org/diversity/ and
click on Registration is Now Open or call OLC at (614) 416-2258. The
registration fee for the conference is only $75.

The Conference is co-sponsored by OLC's Diversity Awareness and Resources
Committee, OHIONET, and OCLC and generously underwritten by grants from the
Ohio Library Foundation and LSTA funds from the Institute of Museum and
Library Services, awarded by the State Library of Ohio.

Conference: Association of American Colleges and Universities
Diversity And Learning: Democracy's Compelling Interest
October 21-23, 2004
Sheraton Nashville Downtown Hotel
Nashville, Tennessee
http://www.aacu-edu.org/meetings/diversityandlearning/DL2004/program.cfm
Diversity and Learning: Democracy's Compelling Interest explores the most
effective ways to tap diversity's full assets to promote the deepest
learning, while also teaching students about the contentious struggles for
democracy that continue to dominate our local and global landscapes. The
conference will explore key questions, such as:

What do we mean by democracy's compelling interests?
What is the role of colleges and universities in a diverse and stratified
democracy?
What do students need to develop capacities to construct shared futures with
and for one another, both here and around the globe?
What would the structures, pedagogies, programs, and policies look like in a
truly inclusive academy?
