The St. Louis Public Library's Fine Arts Department proudly announces that
at long last the list of names of St. Louis area artists and art
organizations
on whom the department has files has been mounted on the library's website.
Unfortunately, the version that was mounted was a draft version, and there
are
some typos, duplicates, and even mistakes. But we wanted to let everyone
know that it's there, with all its flaws -- just consider it a Beta version!
There are over 3300 names on the list, from the beginning of recorded St.
Louis
history, including the westward expansion era, up to the present. This is
only
a list of names, *not the information* that we have. Some of the artists
are well
known and have thick clipping files, some are only represented by a name
on an exhibition list or in a City Directory. Many on the list are there
because
of a collaboration with the St. Louis Art Museum's Library, with whom we
share local artist information.
If you would like to find out what we have on a certain artist, just give us
a call
at 314-539-0383 or send an e-mail to [log in to unmask]
To get to the list (it's somewhat buried on our site), first go to
www.slpl.lib.mo.us
On that screen, click on "Specialized Collections and Indexes" under the
Premier Library Sources banner.
Then click on the box labeled "Alphabetical List of indexes, lists and
biographies"
Then go to "S" and look for "St. Louis Artists" - e voila!
Remembering that it's not a finished product, comments and suggestions are
welcome. I'll be out of town next week so won't be replying until later on.
