Dear Colleague:

EBSCO Publishing has commissioned Salem Press to design, acquire, and edit
content for a database of GLBT history based on historical events. Salem
Press is working with ONE Institute and Archives to provide research support
and source documents. The initial database will consist of 250 essays on
historical events. We have recruited four editorial panelists to assist in
finalization of the initial list of contents. The panel includes Lillian
Faderman, Professor of English, California State University, Fresno and the
author of groundbreaking books of lesbian history: Surpassing the Love of
Men, Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers, and To Believe in Women. Panelist
Horacio Roque Ramirez is Assistant Professor, Department of Chicana and
Chicano Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. Stuart Timmons is
the former executive director of the ONE Institute and Archive and the
author of The Trouble with Harry Hay. And Eric C. Wat has been a visiting
lecturer at UCLA and California State University, Northridge and is the
author of The Making of a Gay Asian Community.

EBSCO Publishing will introduce this database to the library community and
sell annual subscriptions to access the data. It will complement their GLBT
Life, an aggregated periodical database. As a well-respected and
award-winning publisher of reference books in the library community, Salem
Press will publish a print library edition of the contents, supplementing
the essays with photographs, illustration, and original source documents. We
encourage you to learn more about our publications by visiting our website

The standard essay format will consist of:
* Ready reference top matter: Category (law, medicine, business, civil
rights, etc.), date, place, persons involved
* Abstract: A brief summary of the event in 30-50 words
* Summary of the event: A 400-word summary of what happened
* Impact: A 400-word evaluation of the historical impact of the event
* Bibliography: Up to five sources of further information on the event
* Contributor's name

The essays will be assigned at 1,000 words, with a select number of
"overview" essays at 2,000 words. Articles are contracted as "work made for
hire." Payment for 1,000-word essays will be $50, and 2000-word overview
articles at $100. Each essay will appear "signed" with the contributor's
name, and a list of contributors and their affiliations will be published in
the print edition. Upon assignment you will receive detailed writing
instructions which will be e-mailed to you. A formal contract, listing your
assigned essays, will follow in regular mail.
