Greetings to all my colleagues:
I am passing along an announcement regarding the launch of an important new website entitled "Atlanta and the Civil Rights Movement" at http://www.atlantacivilrights.org. Sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education (ARCHE), the civil rights website was officially launched on Monday, May 17th, during a press conference held at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. The new site provides an essay and timeline, an extensive bibliography, links to 50 other web sites, and a unique searchable inventory of special collections containing materials on the movement found at ARCHE’s member institution and affiliated libraries/archives.
ARCHE now moves to the project's next phase, which is to plan a more comprehensive educational site that digitizes certain materials from the libraries and archives (letters, reports, photos, etc.) and to group these into on-line exhibits around key topics such as Atlanta's role as home to many civil rights leaders and organizations. These exhibits will have middle and high school students as their primary target audience. Curricular tools will be provided to assist classroom teachers in using the site. Enhanced finding aids also will be planned for scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, and other researchers. Following the planning process, the project's third phase will be devoted to fund raising and building the comprehensive educational site.
This site demonstrates that Atlanta not only was a key location in the history of the movement, but also continues today as a key location for the study and understanding of civil rights.
