I'm resending this message to the list in hopes of finding a few more
volunteers to participate in a survey about their cataloging practices
regarding pre-1800 books.
Many art libraries own at least a few books from the hand-printed era.
They may not be in a position to or may not wish to give these the type
of detailed cataloging prescribed by Descriptive Cataloging of Rare
Books (DCRB). AACR2 2.12-2.18 provide an alternative guide to dealing
with some of the specialized cataloging situations encontered when
describing early printed books. A Task Force was appointed by ALA's
Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access to study the use of this
section of AACR2 with a view to recommending revisions to the rules or
eliminating them.
Please get in touch with me off the list if you are currently applying
these rules or have an interest in what shape they take in the future.
