Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is seeking a Director for their
Decker Library. MICA, established in 1826, is the oldest independent,
degree-granting, fully accredited art college in the nation and is located
in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland. Offering both undergraduate and
graduate programs, the college enrolls over 1300 students from 45 states and
43 foreign countries and has a continuing studies enrollment of about 4,000
students per year. MICA has been consistently named among the top four art
and design programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
Position Description: The Decker Library has a collection of nearly 49,000
titles with close to 200 current periodical titles. The library provides
electronic access to standard art and humanities databases which include
full-text access to another 2,000 journal titles. The library director
oversees 8 full time employees, including professionals and
paraprofessionals.
Specific Primary responsibilities include:
* Planning, implementing and evaluating policies goals and policies to
further the library's mission
* Advising appropriated administrators and faculty regarding library
practices
* Planning and administering the library budget
* Recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating the library staff
* Developing the library collection to meet the needs of the Academic and
Studio curriculum
* Planning and delivering reference services and bibliographic instruction
* Creating and continuing effective open communication with the
constituencies around campus
* Working with the development department to raise funds and write grants in
support of the library
Qualifications: The position requires an ALA-accredited MLS. Knowledge of
art and design, art history and liberal arts with understanding of
contemporary theory and interdisciplinary practice. A minimum of five years
professional experience in an academic or art research library including:
administration and supervision, strategic planning, collection development,
information technology, budget development and management. Strong oral and
written communication skills are necessary including a commitment to
community outreach, with a pro-active approach to working effectively with
faculty, staff, administrators and students. Demonstrated leadership in the
field of art and academic librarianship, including consortia, is necessary.
