Those attending this year's conference who like jazz, particularly its
earlier styles, should consider signing up for a lively Monday night
event at Cajun Restaurant in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The
event is filling up but there are a few spaces still available. The
music is "hot" and so is the food! Even better- there's no music charge
for those who have dinner at the restaurant.
John Gill, an outstanding master of ragtime, stride and early jazz
styles, holds down the piano chair on Mondays, joined by other members
of his classic "Jazz Kings" group. The cuisine is creole, the prices
moderate. There's plenty of seafood on the menu, some chicken and beef,
and a few vegetarian choices. Entrees run about $15; appetizers range
from $4.50 to $7.50.
So, if you'd like to really spice up your Monday night, sign on for
"jazz at the Cajun." Those attending this event will be leaving the
Roosevelt Hotel at 7:15 pm and returning by 10:30 pm. Travel will be by
subway, so there will be some stairs. The restaurant/club, however, is
at street level. (Location: 129 Eighth Avenue at 16th Street)
